Anadoluhisar is located in Beykoz districtof Istanbul. It is the first structure Turkish people erected on the Bosporus in 1394 by Sultan Bayezid the Thunderbolt. As part of his conquest plans of the Roman capital Constantinople, I Bayezid built the Fortress of Anatolia to the Asian part of today’s modern city Istanbul. The Genoese and Romans had trading colonies by the shores of the Black Sea and the Sultan was planning to block the sea routes of Constantinople. However, his plans to conquer Istanbul were suspended due to the war against the Crusaders in Nicopolis, Bulgaria in 1396. After the victory against the Crusaders in Bulgaria, I Bayezid unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople. He had to defend his land against the armies of the Timurid Empire. The battle of Ankara ended with Ottoman defeat in 1402 that dragged the State to a recession and a civil war among the Ottoman princes. His grandson, II Mehmet reinforced the Anadoluhisar while building the Rumeli Fortress to the European shores of Istanbul. He succeeded in controlling the Bosporus strait and conquered Constantinople in 1453. Mehmet the Conqueror added the 2 towers of the 5 seen today and strengthened the walls of the fortress. Anadoluhisar was a military post and a jail for many years until it was deserted by the Turkish people.

Where is Anadoluhisar?

Fortress of Anatolia is located in Beykoz district of Istanbul. It is standing on the narrowest point of the Bosporus of Istanbul on the Asian side. Anadoluhisar is the official name of the neighborhood yet has a port named after the fortress and a bus stop. Many busses from Kadikoy and Uskudar pass by the fortress which makes your walk on the Asian side of Istanbul even more memorable. You can hop on a ferry from one of the ports in Istanbul and get off at Anadoluhisar. The port is very close to the fortress and the neighborhood is very attractive for those interested in local culture, heritage, food, and photography.

Dimensions of Anadoluhisar

Anadoluhisar is covering approximately 7000 square meters. The Bosporus strait is 650 meters wide which makes defense easier in between the Anadoluhisar and Rumeli Hisar. Anadoluhisar was built with 3 watchtowers by I Bayezid and his grandson II Mehmet added 2 more. The tallest tower reaches to 25 meters and has gun platforms. 2-meter tick walls were built by II Mehmet surrounding the castle. The restoration of the fortress was conducted from 1991 to 1993 and we are looking forward to the grand opening of the Anadolu Hisar to the travelers.
