Halic var Istanbuls naturliga hamn under både den bysantinska och osmanska perioden. Halic, även känt som Gyllene hornet, låg också vid korsningen av traditionella handelsvägar. Varor som transporterades av karavaner från Sidenvägen exporterades till Europa från hamnen i Gyllene hornet.

Efter att Konstantinopel återtogs från korsfararna 1261 gavs alla kommersiella förmåner till genuesarna. De byggde också Galatatornet för att säkra hamnen vid ingången till Gyllene hornet. Efter erövringen av Istanbul ville Fatih Sultan Mehmet inte störa den befintliga ordningen. Av denna anledning beviljades liknande privilegier till både Republiken Genua och Republiken Venedig. På så sätt fortsatte den traditionella handeln längs Sidenvägen.
Det finns ett betydande bysantinskt arv i stadsdelarna kring Gyllene hornet. Särskilt de flesta kyrkor från den sena bysantinska perioden kan ses här. Å andra sidan kommer det största antalet historiska artefakter på båda sidor av Gyllene hornet från det osmanska riket.
