Rumelifästningen
Beläget mellan Bebek och Emirgan på den europeiska kusten av Istanbul täcker Rumeli-fästningen 30 tunnland. Under förberedelserna för erövringen av Istanbul av Fatih Sultan Mehmet färdigställdes den på en kort period av 4 månader för att skydda Istanbul från faror som kunde komma från Svarta havet.
Byggandet av fästningen påbörjades den 15 april 1452. Genom att dela upp arbetet gavs övervakningen av varje sektion till en pascha, och Fatih Sultan Mehmet själv tog på sig byggandet av sektionen vid havet. Sett från havet övervakade Saruca Pasha byggandet av tornet till höger, Zağnos Pasha byggandet av tornet till vänster, och Halil Pasha byggandet av tornet vid stranden. Tornen här bär namnen på dessa paschor.
Byggandet av fästningen slutfördes den 31 augusti 1452. Rumeli-fästningen har totalt fyra torn namngivna efter Saruca Pasha, Halil Pasha, Zağanos Pasha och Küçük (betyder Liten på turkiska) Zağanos Pasha samt 13 bastioner av olika storlekar. Rumeli-fästningen har också världens största slottsbastioner. Tillsammans med bottenvåningarna har Saruca Pasha- och Halil Pasha-tornen 9 våningar, medan Zağanos Pasha-tornet har 8 våningar.
Det finns 4 huvudingångar som Bergsporten, Dizdar-porten, Hisarpeçe-porten, Flodporten och en Kyrkogårdsport. Nära det sydvända tornet finns också 2 hemliga portar i slutet av vägarna som leder till ammunition- och förrådsrum. Det finns två vattenkanaler, varav en är blockerad, och tre fontäner, varav två är försvunna. Endast den förstörda minareten av moskén finns kvar idag.
Rumeli-fästningen, belägen i den smalaste och mest strömmande delen av Istanbul Bosphorus vid 600 meter, precis mittemot Anatoliska fästningen på den anatoliska sidan av Bosphorus, byggdes också för att kunna läsas i form av Muhammad på arabiska bokstäver när den ses på avstånd. Rumeli Hisarı, en populär anhalt för frilufts- och turistbesök av Istanbuls invånare idag, är också ett turistområde och friluftsteater där olika konserter hålls, särskilt på sommaren.
Utsikten och vädret i Rumeli-fästningen är magnifika. Samtidigt visas bollar, kanonkulor och artefakter som består av en del av kedjan som sägs ha stängt Gyllene hornet i dess trädgård.
