Vespasianus Titus-tunneln
Titus-tunneln är ett av ingenjörsverken från den antika världen. Den är också viktig eftersom den är helt handgjord. Kalkstensklippor vid foten av Musa-berget borrades, och Vespasianus galna projekt genomfördes.
Titus-tunneln, eller Vespasianus-tunneln, ligger inom Samandağ-distriktet i Hatays gränser och tog över ett sekel att bygga. Under det första århundradet e.Kr. byggde den romerske kejsaren Vespasianus denna tunnel för att förhindra översvämningar från berget och för att skydda hamnen från att fyllas med vatten.
Titus-tunneln byggdes under det första århundradet f.Kr. av den romerske kejsaren Vespasianus för att skydda staden från livshotande översvämningar som kom ner från bergen. Även om Vespasianus beordrade byggandet av en tunnel som skulle omringa staden och ändra strömmarnas riktning, påbörjades bygget år 69 f.Kr. och slutfördes först år 81 f.Kr. av hans son Titus. Det är därför tunneln har fått sitt namn efter Titus.
Romerska legionärer och slavar användes i byggandet av tunneln. Med hammare och mejslar i händerna började närmare tusen slavar att klyva jorden. Men det fanns ett enormt hinder på kanalens väg. Det tog tid att korsa Musa-berget, som staden vilar på. Tunneln, som är helt uthuggen i Musa-berget, är 1380 meter lång, 7 meter hög och 6 meter bred.
I vissa delar är berget delat på mitten, och med solen högst upp tränger ett fantastiskt ljus in. Detta mästerverk lades till på UNESCO:s världsarvslista år 2014. Trots detta ges det inte tillräckligt med uppmärksamhet.
Öster om Titus-tunneln finns gravkamrar och sarkofager uthuggna ur klippor som bildar stadens västra nekropol. Jag vill påpeka att denna byggnad, som ligger 150 meter öster om Titus-tunnelns ingång, är en magnifik struktur sett till dess arkitektoniska utformning och konstnärliga förståelse.
Det finns 12 gravar i detta område, byggda av en av tidens adliga familjer. Den mest kända av dessa är området som kallas Besikli-grottan. De andra gravarna är åtskilda från varandra av väggar. Dessa stensarkofager är förbundna med pelare och valv och leder från topp till botten igen via stentrappor.
