Sardes Antik Kenti
Sardes Antik Kenti, Manisa'nın Salihli ilçesine bağlı Sart kasabasında yer alır ve antik çağlarda Lidya Devleti'nin başkenti olarak hizmet vermiştir. Tarihte paranın ilk kez devlet garantisi altında basıldığı yer olarak bilinir. Zenginlikle eş anlamlı olan Karun'un vatanı olan ünlü Kral Yolu'nun başlangıç noktasıdır. Marmara Gölü'nün güney kenarında yer alan ve bir Lidya tümülüs mezarlığı olan Bin Tepeler, dünyanın en büyük tümülüs alanı olarak kabul edilir. Sardes Antik Kenti ve Bin Tepeler Lidya Tümülüsü, UNESCO Dünya Mirası Geçici Listesi'nde yer almaktadır.
Sardes, MÖ 7. yüzyıldan MS 7. yüzyıla kadar Anadolu'nun ulaşım, yönetim ve ticaret açısından en önemli şehirlerinden biriydi. Verimli Gediz Ovası (antik çağda Hermus), dağlardaki yüksek yaylalar ve ormanlar, çevredeki derelerden içme suyu ve el sanatlarıyla çevriliydi. Geçilmez kalesi (Akropolis) ile ayrıcalıklı bir şehir konumundaydı. Sart Deresi'nden (antik çağda Paktolos) elde ettikleri doğal altın alüvyonları sayesinde Lidyalılar büyük bir servet kazandılar ve Anadolu'nun en zengin ve en güçlü halkı oldular. Bu nedenle şehir, yüzyıllardır Altın Sardes olarak anılmıştır. Sardes'in 7 km kuzeyinde yer alan kraliyet tümülüsleri (Bin Tepeler), bugün bize Lidyalıların zenginliğini ve gücünü göstermektedir.
Antik çağlarda ticaret yolları çok önemliydi. Ünlü İpek Yolu ve Baharat Yolu gibi, Kral Yolu da antik çağlarda ticaretin gelişmesinde önemli bir yer tutan ticaret yollarından biriydi. Kral Yolu, batıda Sardes Antik Kenti ve Efes Antik Kenti'nden başlayarak Perslerin başkenti Persepolis'e kadar uzanır.
Kral Yolu ilk olarak Lidya Kralı Giges tarafından inşa edilmiştir. MÖ 5. yüzyılda Pers İmparatoru I. Darius döneminde onarılmış ve yeniden düzenlenmiştir. Günümüzde çoğunlukla Pers Kral Yolu olarak bilinse de, aslında Lidya ve Pers medeniyetlerinin ortak bir eseri olarak kabul edilebilir.
Lidya Devleti MÖ 546'da yıkıldıktan sonra Sardes şehri Perslerin egemenliğine geçti. Daha sonra Makedon Kralı Büyük İskender, Roma İmparatorluğu ve Bizans İmparatorluğu'nun egemenliğine giren şehir, önemli bir piskoposluk merkezi haline geldi.
Sardes Antik Kenti'nde yapılan kazılardan çıkarılan eserlerin çoğu şu anda New York Metropolitan Müzesi'nde sergilenmektedir.
