Bocuk Gecesi, Türkçe'de Bocuk gecesi anlamına gelir. 6 Ocak gecesi, kuzeybatı Türkiye'deki insanlar, neredeyse Halloween'e benzer bir festival düzenler. Ancak kabakları oymak yerine, evlerine gelen insanlara sunmak için lezzetli bir tatlı yaparlar. İşte hikayesi;
Trakya dillerindeki Božić (bojic) kelimesinin benzerliği nedeniyle, Bocuk Gecesi'nin, 6 Ocak gecesi kutlanan ve vaftiz günü olan Hristiyan festivalinden esinlendiği düşünülmektedir. Ancak, Sırp tarihçi Tihomir Đorđević, Nas Narodni Zivot adlı kitabında bunun eski bir Türk festivali olduğunu iddia etmektedir. Festivalin kökenlerinden ziyade, arkasındaki hikaye hakkında konuşmak çok daha ilgi çekicidir.
Bölgedeki yaşlılara göre, Bocuk 80 yaşında bir kadındır. Daha genç olmak için kara büyüye başvurur. Kolunun altında 21 gün boyunca bir yumurta taşıdığına inanılır. Yumurta çatladığında ve tavuk büyüdüğünde, onu 6 farklı ocakta pişirip yer. Bu, onu tekrar 18 yaşına döndürür ve yakışıklı bir gençle güzel bir randevuya çıkmak yerine, onu tüm tezgahları ziyaret ederken ve inekleri çıplak bir şekilde sağarken buluruz! İnsanlar, bu ineklerin bir daha asla süt vermeyeceğine inanır. Bunu önlemek için Trakya halkı, Bocuk kadınının en sevdiği yiyecek olan kabak tatlısı yapar ve evlerinin çatısına koyar ki Bocuk kadını yiyebilsin. Ayrıca, insanlar evlerde toplanır, sabah ışığına kadar onun hakkında ve onu daha önce gördüğünü iddia eden kişilerle ilgili hikayeler anlatır. O gece dışarıda dolaşmanın uğursuz olduğuna inanılır. Şeker mi şaka mı gibi, insanlar yüzlerini hayalet gibi beyaz yapmak için nişasta kullanır ve pencerelerinde Bocuk Kadınını bekleyen insanları korkuturdu! İnsanlar, pencerelerine gelenlere sunmak için kabak tatlısı hazırlar. Geçmişte, kabaklardan fenerler yapar ve Bocuk Kadınını korkutmak için köylerinin karanlık sokaklarında dolaşırlardı.
Bu eski festival, 2006 yılından beri Türkiye'nin kuzeybatı köylerinde yeniden popüler hale gelmiştir. Son 3 yılda katılımcı sayısı o kadar arttı ki, Edirne İl Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı, yerel festivalin UNESCO listesine alınması için başvuruda bulundu. Edirne'nin Çamlıca köyünde o gece oluşan trafik ve kalabalıktan insanlar şikayet etse de, internet ve sosyal medya sayesinde Bocuk Gecesi her yıl daha da büyüyecek gibi görünüyor.
