The Green Tomb of Bursa is located in the complex of Mehmet Celebi. It is locally known as green complex which is translated as Yesil Kulliye in the Turkish language. The Green Complex of Bursa consists of the Green Mosque, Green Tomb, a madrasah, a bathhouse and a soup kitchen. It is one of the three complexes Ottomans built in Bursa city. The Green Tomb is the jewel of this complex. The Green Tomb construction finished in 1421. Mehmet the first passed away 40 days after the end of the project. He is buried in the Green Tomb along with his family. His grave is in the center of the tomb. The tombs of Mustafa, Mahmut and Yusuf are sons of the Sultan. Ayse, Hafsa, Sitti and Selcuk are his daughters. Nana Daya is buried along with the children of Mehmet I into the monumental grave. 9 people are lying underneath the breathtaking dome of the Green Tomb of Sultan Mehmet the first.

Ottoman Sultan Mehmet the first is also known as Mehmet Celebi. Celebi stands for the noble-born in Ottoman Turkish and lord’s son in Roman. His father Bayezid I also known as Bayezid the Thunderbolt was captured by Tamerlane in 1402. 4 of his sons escaped the battlefield and started the Ottoman Civil War which is also called the Ottoman Interregnum. He was victorious against his three brothers and ruled Anatolia and Thrace for 8 years until he passed away in 1421. He could not see the end of the construction of the Green Mosque but his tomb.

The Green Tomb is a hexagonal structure. There is a burial chamber underneath the chest decorated with tiles in the hall. The tomb is decorated with beautiful Iznik tiles. Haci Ivaz Pasha is the architect of the Green Tomb. The hexagonal tomb is 7 meters to 11 meters in width. The total height of the dome is 25 meters from the outside. The facades of the tomb are decorated with beautiful Iznik tiles. The walls are covered by 3 meters high tiles on the inside. The tiles of the altar are breathtaking. The Green Tomb stands at the highest point of the green complex. An earthquake in 1855 damaged the Green Tomb. Some of the Iznik tiles were restored with Kutahya tiles. Still, the Green Tomb amazes the visitors of Bursa City.
