Ani, 10. ve 11. yüzyıllarda Orta Çağ Ermeni Bagratid Krallığı'nın gelişen başkentiydi. Akhurian Nehri'ne bakan yüksek bir plato üzerinde dramatik bir şekilde konumlanmış olan şehir, İpek Yolu üzerindeki bir merkezdi ve tüccarları, bilim adamlarını ve zanaatkarları çekiyordu. Harabeler, Ermeni Orta Çağ mimarisi ve tahkimatlarının olağanüstü bir karışımını içerir. DÜŞÜŞ VE TERK EDİLİŞ
Ani'nin refahı, tekrarlanan istilalar, depremler ve ticaret yollarındaki değişiklikler nedeniyle azalmaya başladı. 14. yüzyıla gelindiğinde, büyük ölçüde terk edildi ve doğa ile zamanın etkilerine bırakıldı. Türkiye-Ermenistan sınırındaki izole konumu, onu modern arkeolojik çalışmalar ortaya çıkana kadar nispeten dokunulmamış tuttu. 2016'da Ani, UNESCO Dünya Mirası Alanı olarak kaydedilerek küresel kültürel önemini pekiştirdi.
